Build your #BucketlistAB in downtown Medicine Hat

The communities of Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass invite you to come explore this August and September through #BucketlistAB. That invite not just comes with epic southern hospitality, but with a sustainable approach to its tourism offerings.

A cool craft brewery specializing in awesome ales? Check. A list of thriving artisan coffee shops loaded with local treats? Check. Hot and tasty Latin cuisine? Check. Yes, for me, downtown Medicine Hat was well on its way to checking all the right boxes.

It’s all right there off a street numbered three in and around Medicine Hat’s historic downtown. That same street, the #3, then turns into Highway Three connecting Alberta’s south. With the city's new Peaks To Prairies Initiative, EV charging stations can connect travellers to more than just experiences from Medicine Hat to Pincher Creek, but also right into B.C.

Set the compass to explore and point your car into the city for some of the most energetic experiences “The Hat” has to offer.

From the airport (serviced by both WestJet and Air Canada), or from really anywhere in town, you are downtown in minutes.

Sitting snug along the beautiful South Saskatchewan River, the historic downtown area in Medicine Hat is going to exceed your expectations. A thriving coffee shop culture, gorgeous heritage buildings, mature riverside parks and pathways, and an eclectic culinary scene are just some of the characteristics you'll discover when you visit.

Everything is within walking or biking distance (free-to-borrow bikes available at Gravity Sports and the Visitor Centre), taking you to what I discovered are some of my favourite spots.

Unquestionably, art is a big part of the energy in Medicine Hat. Just recently the city held its inaugural Mural Fest, which transformed six non-descript walls into an array of brilliant pieces of art.

Without a doubt, the international artists who came in for the festival were well-caffeinated by the array of java hot spots. And Station Coffee House, which is surrounded by murals, was likely one of their stops. It certainly has been mine on a couple of recent visits. Delicious small-batch baking, live music, a street-side patio, and delicious locally roasted coffee by Bean There Roasting are some of the highlights.

For lunch, we tested the tasty Salvadoran flavours at Izote. This authentic little place in the heart of downtown specializes in papusas, tacos and enchiladas, all of which showcase the complex flavours of Latin America.

To cap off the downtown Medicine Hat toura visit to Travois Ale Works was the right thing to do. It did not disappoint. Known for beers of exceptional quality, Travois is located in a restored heritage building with tons of character. It has a sweet little loft, and a perfect outdoor patio on the street make Travois one of the shiny new stars on Alberta's burgeoning craft beer scene.

Those of us visiting here in #MedHat are living in a culture where the beer is better. The coffee is better. And the food is better. Especially in downtown Medicine Hat.
