Lethbridge is home to the world’s tallest and longest trestle bridge, and perhaps known for its strong Alberta winds, but it’s also home to great businesses, restaurants and attractions that make up its downtown core. It’s time to park the car, put on your walking shoes, and explore Lethbridge.

It’s full of contrasts – buildings steeped in history, relics of a bygone era transformed into new spaces, mixed with gleaming modern facades that evoke creativity and energy, feeding the city’s growing arts scene.

Where to Eat

You need fuel before you explore! From espresso to sandwiches and house-cured meats, The Stoketown Café and Cure is a modern café with fresh, house-made food options. “We make our own bacon, smoke our own brisket and brine our own chicken. We believe in simple food made well.,” says owner Glen Fenimore. If you’re lucky, you’ll be there on a day when their homemade dill pickle soup is on the stove.

If you’re feeling a little more “ole,” try Tacos Made in Mexico. Family-run, the Balderas family hails from Tlaxcala, Mexico, and brought their traditional recipes with them when they came to Canada. According to Gerardo and Sara Balderas, son and daughter of the owners, their favourite menu options are the “3 tacos” meal or the pozole, a traditional soup made from scratch on the weekends.

You’ll feel relaxed the moment you walk into Telegraph Tap House, housed in Lethbridge’s original telegraph office. Stacks of suitcases and bicycles on mounted on the wall are a nod to Belgium’s beer scene, many of which are available on tap. From ciders, to European craft beers to local craft choices and a large food menu, what to eat and drink might be your hardest decision of the day.

Once a coffee house and now a beloved bistro, Mocha Cabana is passionate about working with local food suppliers and farmers to fuel their impressive menu. If it’s a nice day, ask for a seat on their expansive back patio, and enjoy their fantastically fresh menu.

Lethbridge’s downtown streets are filled with independent shops and boutiques. For something fun and different, Drunken Sailor is a clothing boutique with a focus on fun and fashionable clothing with a retro, rockabilly feel. “People are naturally curious about our store, and have fun trying on great outfits,” says Tanya Holt, store manager. According to Holt, the store will soon be carrying merchandise from local Lethbridge bands, part of its effort to support the local Lethbridge music scene.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is home to great art exhibits as well as a store that features locally made items, jewelry and art pieces. Many of the items are one-of-a-kind, giving you a direct link to the arts community.

Where to Play

Think you’ve got game? Relax for a few hours at the Round Table Board Gamerie, housed in Lethbridge’s old police station. While classics like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit are on the wall (along with 400 other games), co-owner Casey Rupps recommends people try lesser-known games, like “Betrayal at the House on the Hill.” He’s so passionate about games, he and his business partner Bryn Watts have a YouTube channel that gives tutorials on how to play various games.

Cool off and let the kids run free at the Rotary Centennial Fountain at Galt Gardens. Dozens of fountains spout water straight in the air, to the delight of kids (and some adults!) alike.

Tap your feet, pick up a paint brush, have a laugh, or just visit with friends at Owl Acoustic Lounge. Operating since 2010, the lounge had humble beginnings. “When we first moved into the space, we cashed in bottles from the basement to pay for paint for the walls, and we grew from there,” says co-owner Steve Foord. Today, the lounge has grown extensively from its humble beginnings, but still has an eclectic and retro feel. It’s home to live music acts, paint night activities, live stand-up comedy and more.
