The boreal forest surrounding Bonnyville area offers up a quiet retreat into nature, complemented with the camaraderie of the local scene. The Bonnyville Nordic Ski Club embodies the essence of local ski culture, which centers around bringing people together and enjoying the great outdoors.

Founded by long-time skiers Les and Sarah Parsons, the club is built on the simple principle of sharing time outdoors with others, in support of community.

“For me, it’s getting a community of people together,” says Les. “Our hope is just to build a community and connections with people of all ages; it’s family-friendly, affordable and it’s lifelong. There is no finish line.”

The club maintains groomed trails at Cold Lake Provincial Park, while the MD of Bonnyville maintains trails at Muriel Lake.

Ice fishing on Cold Lake

Casting a line on Cold Lake in the late afternoon can be a way to commune with nature or just soak up some extra vitamin D on a winter's day.

Cold Lake is a prime Alberta destination for ice fishing.

The lake is deep and full of trout, but whether you catch or just fish, the wide expanse of white lake and blue sky delivers that sense of deeper connection to place. You can check in with Anglers' Bait Tackle and More, for all your gear and guiding needs.

Cider tasting at Journey North
